Twin engines mounted away from fuselage; blunt nose; high cabin windows; large sponsons; odd one-sided horizontal stabilizer projects to starboard. Later models have canted vertical stabilizer, as does Super Stallion (next entry).

Many fewer CH-53s fly than the Hawk series. Most common near Marine Corps bases. Although built as a large and durable troop carrier, the CH-53 has a very high ceiling and is quite maneuverable. Several have been purchased by Alpine countries as mountain rescue craft. In Navy paint, serves as a transport, rescue platform, and minesweeper.
