This aircraft, and the 16 that followed, were attempts at a very thick wing, more of a design attempt than an engineering solution or result of wind tunnel testing. A thick wing may work in flying wing designs, but not in traditional aircraft designs, where it doesn't improve lift in terms of lift /weight ratio.
