The Douheret helicopter of 1919 was the first helicopter with the engine placed between its two coaxial rotors.

Glad I found out about this guy. Bruno Nagler gave this idea a try I read in his 1950's Model 120 and 160 designs. Google patents 2948491 and 3206145 for what he came up with. I am looking into it for a one man kit copter idea I have. Lower part count then even a tip jet design!

If you Google "Rotative Engine YouTube" you will see the clip of a Russain company's latest efforts in their engine design to revive this idea for helicopters.
