hi john. The US is paying the Czech republic firm, not Chech (Chechnia) firm. The Czech rep. is situated in the middle EU and is a NATO member.

Not that I don't like the Kamovs, but the argument about better targeting accuracy was out of date even in '99 and ignores modern gun-stabilization technology. Consider that your average helicopter probably rides smoother than any tank; and you've seen the cool videos from the end of the gun barrel (Rosvertol actually has the same type video from the end of the Mi-24 barrels). Replacing the Hind over targeting accuracy would never happen. Even now, the US is paying a Chech firm to rebuild and update some Mi-24 (and Mi-17) for Afgan army. The Ka-29TB is actually closer to the what Mi-24 was meant to be, though: a heaily armed and armored assault(boots on the ground) helicopter requiring no escort.
