The F.K.50 was designed to meet a requirement from the Swiss

Barry, 21.07.2016 16:59

Designed to meet a requirement from the Swiss airline Swiss Alpar there were only three produced. The one in the photograph is the only FK.50A, and was the one example that lasted the longest. It was sold to Liberian operator Maryland Air Services in 1947 and flew with them until the plane crashed near Monrovia on 6th July 1962.

F.K.50:-

Power plant 2 x 406 h.p Pratt & Whitney Wasp Junior TB radial engines
Accommodation 2 crew and 8 passengers

Span 58'0 3/4" Length 46'11" Gross weight 9,369 lb

Max speed 183 mph

As a little boy I managed to get a seat on a Kooloven on a pleasure flight full of children. It was around 1953 when Alpar organized 10-minutes flights around Berne Airport for a children-club called Fip-Fop-Club (founded by Nestlé to entertain kids). What a treat: My first flight ever!

Frits Koolhoven was a prolific aircraft designer and designed aircraft for companies not only in the Netherlands (Nationale Vliegtuigindustrie and his own company, N.V. Koolhoven Vliegtuigen), but also for Armstrong Whitworth and BAT in Great Britain and, I think, Desoutter in France. I have records of no less than 45 of his designs being built; probably there were even more than that. His "F.K." design numbers went at least as high as F.K.58.
