North American F-86D / YF-95 Dog Sabre

The F-95 designation was assigned initially to the radar-equipped, all-weather interceptor version of the North American F-86 Sabre. The first two YF-95A airframes (50-577/ 578) were hastily assembled in 1949 with the nose configuration but not the radar of production aircraft. The two YF-95As also lacked the missile armament and afterburner of the production machine, being equipped instead with an extremely crude external reheat device at the exhaust for the 2460kg thrust General Electric J47-GE-17 turbojet engine. By the time the first of these machines had been completed and made its first flight on 22 December 1949 with company test pilot Joseph Lynch at the controls, it had been redesignated F-86D. Subsequent production machines were the F-86D, F-86K and F-86L.

Worked radar shop flight-line & 100 hr. inspection dock with 339th at Chitose during 1957. Winter short fly-days because of snow, but told to relax for long summer hours, then ran low on fuel for summer so had Wednesdays and weekends off for "recreation." Sent to 16th at Naha when Chitose was returned to Japanese Air Defense. Too short in Naha to go with 16th to Taiwan during the uprising there. Finally sent to Moody at Valdosta, Georgia.

Was a crew chief on them in 1955-56-57 with the 16th FIS at Naha, Okinawa. They were a good aircraft at the time but worked on some even better ones during my Air Force Carreer which ended in 1974.

I was a CC in the 94th FIS at George (52-54), crewed a D (53-54). Joe Lynch put on a demo for the pilots, doing a 180 slo roll at about 50' in after burner and climbed out inverted at the end of the runway. Amazing demo of plane & pilot.

I worked IEC at Stewart AFB in 1955. We received an entire squadron, I think about 30 aircraft. Within one month every one was out for bad IEC, Air Force had failed to train IEC techs. Unit asked for volunteers from jet mechanics, engine shop, radar and electricians. I signed up ,GE sent a very smart guy by the name of Don Willets to our base, he trained us with a black board and chalk to be IEC technicians. Within a couple weeks we had all the birds back in the air. Our run up area was about a mile from flight line. I asked if I could be checked out to taxi, the squadron commander a man by the name of Ratty said okay. For the next two years me and my shop mates spent almost every day in the run up area. It was a great education and fun job.

I was in the 357 from fall of 55 to spring of 57. I think 403 was my ship with the nose art of ( Myassisdragging) in old Engish letters. The guy before me was a guy named Joyce from NC.
Major Dillde was CO? His ship had white stripe on the nose. When I arrive built the hangers from a pile of metal laying on the ramp. Those were the good old days.I am in Georgia and would like to hear you.

I was in the 68th FIS as a crew chief from 1954 till 1958. I crewed 006 for Lt (then) Shulstad and 093 for Lt WK Walker. Wonderful memories from a midair collision of 2 aircraft over the end of the runway to oh so many hours on the alert pad on the end of the runway.I believe the pilot of our trainer in that collision was Lt Brummel. If there are any of you that were there then contact me at my email address.
