Roland Payen designed this wooden built aircraft and it first flew on 22nd January 1954. Payen had long been an advocate of tail less research going back to before the war. The Pa.49 was retired from flight in 1958 and is currently housed in the Musee de l'Air at Le Bourget.

The Payen Pa 49 Katy was a tiny, experimental, turbojet powered tailless aircraft. It was first flown in 1954. It was the first French aircraft of this kind and the smallest jet aircraft of its day.
