Entered into competition with the Dewoitine 500, there was very little to differentiate the two aircraft, in that in some parameters one was better than the other and vica verca. The Avaition Militaire decided against Bernard because of the time delay in using the slots i.e. it was 10% slower at reaching 3,000 meters (9,800 ft) and they were concerned at the "chaotic nature" of Bernard's management structure. The improved Bernard 261 with a more powerful Hispano-Suiza 12 Ybrs and retractable undercarriage was started but never flown.
