Back NA Design NA40 "Bongo"

NA40 Bongo two-seat light utility helicopter

NA Design was created in third quarter of 1999, in co-operation with Moravan Aeroplanes Inc. Development of the (formerly UNIS) Bongo continued into early 2002, at which time NA Design was seeking a Western partner to assist with certification, production and marketing; the project was put on hold in late 2002 while finance was sought but, despite this, a new version, the four-seat NA50, was announced in late 2002. Some US$2.5 million said to be required to bring aircraft to production readiness.

TYPE: Two-seat ultralight helicopter.

PROGRAMME: Design work 1992 followed by model tests 1993; construction of Bongo technology demonstrator started 1996; public debut at rno International Machinery Fair 1997 (then called TINTS NA40 and with two-blade main rotor) by first prototype OK-CIU. Began 70 hours of tethered hover flights March 1998. Two further prototypes completed by mid-1998. NA Design plans Normal category certification to FAR Pts 27, 33, 34 and 36 by late 2003, subject to finding joint venture Western partner to share certification, manufacturing and marketing costs. However, by 2002, financial support of US$2.5 million was still being solicited, but nothing further had been heard by early 2003.

  • NA 40 Bongo: Basic civil version; as described.
  • NA 42 Barracuda: Proposed military/police version. Power plant as NA 40 or single Rolls-Royce 250 engine; stub-wings for weapons carriage; undernose sensor turret; intercom. Otherwise generally as NA 40.
  • NA 44 Bion: Projected UAV version of NA 42 for various military and civil applications.
  • NA 50: Proposed four-seat version announced in late 2002 with estimated unit cost of US$1 million.

COSTS: Approximately US$750,000 (2001).

DESIGN FEATURES: Three-blade teetering rotor; pod and boom fuselage with inverted Y-tail unit. Cocomo patented anti-torque system eliminates need for tail rotor, reduces transmission complexity and operating noise level.

FLYING CONTROLS: Conventional cyclic and collective controls. Ducted air anti-torque system.

STRUCTURE: Mainly composites, including rotor blades; some aluminium in fuselage, otherwise double-curvature monocoque sandwich; laminated, vacuum-formed elastomeric rotor head.

LANDING GEAR: Tubular twin-skid gear with ground handling wheels. Inflatable permanent or emergency floats optional.

POWER PLANT: TWO 86kW Prvni Brnenska Strojina PBS Velka Bites 50 turboshafts, with FADEC and dual ignition. Engines mounted side by side behind cockpit; transmission via combining gearbox. Single self-sealing fuel tank beneath engines, capacity 210 litres.

ACCOMMODATION: Adjustable, foldable and anatomically shaped seats for pilot and passenger. Baggage space aft of seats; provision for additional, aerodynamic baggage container under fuselage. Gull-wing window/door each side, hinged on centreline and opening upward.

SYSTEMS: Dual 27V DC electrical systems; external power receptacle.

AVIONICS: Instrumentation: VFR standard; IFR to be offered later.

EQUIPMENT: Rocket-deployed emergency recovery parachute optional.

We have approved finance from Indian bankers subject to: submitting project report, project profile, cost of manufacturing machinery(imported and local), estimation of building site cost, technology transfer agreement from your self to our Indian company, technical experts profile(your self), blueprints of product, your cost of designing, your cost to building, your fees to stay in India for building and supplying prototype gyroplane which is to be approved by Indian aviation authorities required standard, you will supply product profile, estimated cost of gyroplane building materials, raw materials, tools, cost of imported part and machinery from your side (for time being we will import until 100% manufacturing on parts and machinery commence on site in India that is what we aim to achieve in this project), product test and product safety report by you, export market potential, you will transfer patent and design on the name of Indian company, you will singe MOU (Memorandum of Understandings) between your self and us to be submitted to bankers. We hope to produce three to five craft per month with your expert help.
We are originally Indian based finance company, for past twenty years established in UK having had office in Nottingham UK, with three partners, company is a registered FSA license holder. One of the partners is registered charted accountant (sima).

After studying your site we have decided to approach you. We had been in negotiations with Japanese, European, US, Canadian, New Zealand manufacturer as well, but many month later we found it hard to deal with there attitude towards MOU and cost.
We can discuss further once we know that you have interest in this venture with us.

Cash investment and land assets owned by Indian & British partner will be used as security to raise finance for proposed project from Indian bankers.
10% of cash equity will be taken from partner investor or your self if you wish to but in that case you will not charge for your work your effort and expertise will become your share holdings (who will have position on board) this is to obtain finance from bank with lower interest rate.
The technology partner (designer or in this case its your self) will have to provide and over see the submission of all required necessary paper work, on gyroplane project to the bank and government licensing authority in India, this will require you to visit India and take all necessary information by visiting in person. (Off course, expanses will be regarded as your contribution to project overall cost or if you so wish we will pay for your travel and fees).
You can also fix your royalty on sale of your designed gyroplane as well, it’s all up to your wish its either you become partner or designer.
Your share will be decided as per your involvement extent and your own interest in project.
15% equity can be bought in from public shares if bankers are charging higher interest rate.
