1985 - project

Mi-42

The Mi-40 programme was first launched as early back as in 1983 to be suspended soon since the company went for the Mi-42 helicopter featuring the unconventional NOTAR concept to compensate the main rotor's reactive torque. Due to the Soviet Union collapse and general economic crisis, the Mi-42 programme had to be cancelled.

It would be werry interesting to see the turning performance of such a fan-based heli (but the doubblerotor system of kamovs is a little better idea). Seems to me be ewen a little stealth-capable whyte some few changes. But, the idea of ski-gear instead of an wheeled one is a little strange, together whyte the wing lenght. To know the details about the project from the inventor would be quite interesting.

Russian page says:

In the early 80 - ies in the composition of the formation of the USSR Army aviation structures Armeyskoy its command began to develop its own requirements for new Army helicopters. The basis of army aviation should be VBMP, which were intended to improve combat capabilities and mobility-assault craft, intelligence and motor parts and units. The tasks included VBMP implementation of tactical landing, urgent lift, raids defeat equipment and manpower enemy fire onboard weapons, as well as support from the air fighting landing on the ground with the capture and retention facilities and lines of defence in depth of the enemy. In addition, VBMP intended to address and support tasks, such as movement of goods and weapons, evacuation of the wounded, the execution of search and rescue operations, intelligence, communications, etc. .. In doing so, they had to work in conditions of adequate action Army, that is day and night in any weather, in any terrain. They are required neprihotlivost in maintenance, piloting simplicity, the possibility of pairing with means of communication, systems, logistics and armament Army.

Tasks Military Industrialization Commission of the Council of Ministers of the USSR to develop VBMP MVZ them. ML Mile received in March 1985. The finished by that time the draft Mi-40 is not consistent with high standards of customer and therefore was rejected. Then EDO engineers led by chief designer A. N. Ivanov started to design VBMP Mi-42 a new scheme. Compensate jet carrying no screws and implement management track by helicopter to be no longer commonplace steering propeller, and with a new system of the type NOTAR, won in those years the spread of light vehicles in the American firm Hughes. Such a system was an air / gas inside the tail channel beams, in which fan cast compressed air that goes under great pressure from a number of gaps and nozzles with deflectors. Connect with inductive flow under bearing screw emanating from the air gaps formed on the side rail aerodynamic force, no pariruyuschuyu jet propeller. Installed at the nozzle end beams with deflectors served for track management helicopter. The lack of steering the screw was to ensure the safety of helicopters operating near the paratroopers and improve combat survivability machines. In addition, the jet exhaust nozzles from propulsivnaya create additional forces needed to achieve customer requirements specified in high speed flight of 380-400 km / hr.

Apart from the NOTAR system on request in the design Mi-42 were introduced and other innovations. The military demanded not only provide transportation to VBMP offices soldiers, but also set the all-weather hard-sighting flight-navigation package, increased bookings and powerful weaponry, almost no different from applying to the "flying tank" Mi-28. "Obschevoyskoviki" wanted, in fact, receive BMP flying. Their appetites have grown steadily: from the requirement to increase the necessary weapons stockpile stewardship, to use as the main diesel fuel requirements to simplify piloting the machine is so complex that it copes sergeant-dvuhgodichnik etc.

All this greatly complicated the design of the machine. Constructor does not have been able to provide a given amount of take-off mass of the helicopter. Instead forced TVZ-117 engine they had to consider other, sometimes quite unusual options for engines, existing and prospective. To research on VBMP actively engaged scientists TsAGI, TSIAM, NIIAS and other institutions of the aviation industry and the customer. Avanproekt and full-scale mock-Mi-42 permanently alter the NOTAR system to work at such a heavy helicopter was questionable, so it had to cancel and replace it with a screw-steering fenestronom and located on the sides of the helicopter propulsivnymi fans. In the end, concluded that "... to establish a helicopter in strict accordance with the technical task with existing customer in our country the technical level of development of technology and instrument can not be." work on the Mi-42 were stopped. Currently, the prospects of development programmes VBMP seen only in the design of helicopter-based dynamic system Mi-28N.

Might have been a good invention.
