De Hill, e-mail, 29.04.2020 19:39

I was stationed at Perrin AFB Texas from 1961-1962, was assigned to the 57th A&E, and was a Autopilot/ Compass systems repairman on F-86l's. I was told most of our aircraft were modified F-86D's. The F-86L's went away about halfway through 1962. We already had a bunch of F-102's. Perrin was a advanced interceptor training base,

Was reassigned to Naha AB Okinawa in December of 1962. All the NAHA 86'l's were already gone.

I worked on T-33's, F-86L's, F-102's and C-130's during my time in the USAF. Sadly they have all gone to the boneyard.

Joe Watkins, e-mail, 06.04.2020 22:25

I live on the Key Peninsula in Wa. near MaChord. I and several of my neighbors have found numerous remains of the 2 f-86D's that collided over the Carr Inlet back in Dec. of 1954. We can only find a little info on the 2 pilots that sadly lost their lives. Any info would be appreciated as we would like to Honor these men but we know so little about them. Thank You.

J. Pierce, e-mail, 01.04.2015 03:17

To John Coffey, 16.11.2014 who posted on this site..
Do you remember a Maj. Edward Dudeck who flew F-86Ds when you were at Oscoda or with the 71st FIS at Greater Pittsburgh Airport..?
He was my grandfather.

Nate Melber Jr., e-mail, 30.03.2015 23:46

Of all the Aircraft I crewed,94C,F86D and F102,the F86D was the best of them all.

Retired MSGT Nate Melber.

Hal Cusick, e-mail, 23.01.2015 21:25

Squadron-mate with Art Connor who was first USAF Sq. pilot to fire the mouse, at Yuma, 1954. We were 440th FIS "Mad Dog" Geiger then Europe. Excellent, fast, good instrument and formation airplane. Many early airplane problems were resolved in the -35s we flew four years Europe (Landstuhl and Erding). I had no engine or systems problems xcpt loss of one pod and one loss of instruments. Before getting -35, flying night take-off to East over rising residence area from Geiger without A/B was a thrill, could have flown Sandy Claus wing! HC

Art Connor, e-mail, 23.01.2015 05:50

One of the initial 440th FIS pilots flying the F 86D @ Geiger AFB WA. Deployed with the squadron to +Landstuhl and subsequently to Erding Germany, rocketry @ Wheelus AFB Libia. Instructed @ Moody AFB using the F 86L. Superb weather aircraft.

I was a fuel control specialist with the 440th FIS at Landstuhl in 1955 and we moved to Erding in 1956 and I returned to the states in 1958. Reenlisted and went to Sioux City, IA and worked on the D until they were phased out. Went on to data processing and then computers. SAGE and AUTODIN Systems. Transfered to the Army in 1968 as a CWO and retired after Vietnam in 1974. Hosted a 440th FIS reunion here in New Orleans in 2003. Love to hear from any of the old gang.

John Coffey, e-mail, 16.11.2014 01:22

I was stationed at Oscoda AFB with the 63rdFIS 1951 - 1953. With the 63rd I was in the comm. shop. After making S/Sgt I was X-ferd to the 71st FIS at Greater Pittsburgh Airport. There I was shop chief of Elec.Engine Control (EEC) on the very first F-86Ds to go tactical. I see that later EEC became EFC. I remember that any time an engine burped all fingers pointed @ EEC. Then later it was found to be mechanical on the engine.

In Erding from June 1952-Oct 1955 (3.5 years). Loved the Area and Munich esp. I was in In 11th Comm Maint Sq. Have a Photo book for year 1952 of the Base Personnel. Anyone around from that time?

Buddy, e-mail, 28.05.2014 19:15

My first assignment out of basic was the 440FIS at Erding Air Base, Germany. Arrived in July 1959 and departed for 496 FIS in Jan 1960. The Sabre Jet F86D was a cool bird. German Air Force had control of the base but they also had F86 birds and we would borrow parts from each other if we had to get an airplane operational that was AOCP/ Aircraft Out of Commission for Parts. Three minutes flying time from the Czech border. A great place to be stationed. Only one hour from Munich!

art dessenberger, e-mail, 19.05.2014 06:44

I was with the 496th from Calif to France to Landstuhl. Crew chief on FU 940, Great ship, great crew and pilots and great times.

Johnny Carrouth, e-mail, 27.12.2013 00:59

I was in EFC shop 41st FIS Yokota, Japan in 1955/56. Was EFC Shop Chief when we moved the 41st to Guam. Spent 7 days on Iwo Jima on the refueling/repair team during the transfer to Guam. From Guam went to FMS at McGuire AFB, N.J. Went to Aviation Cadet Program, graduated in 1959 and went to F-86L training at Perrin AFB, GA. Never got to fly the L in an active squadron as the "needs of the Air Force" changed and we all went to SAC myself in B-47's. Later got to fly the F-102 at Perrin and Goose Bay.

Marvin McClain, e-mail, 27.12.2013 00:53

I worked as an electric technician on the F86D simulator at Tyndall AFB, FL in the 1956 - 1957 timeframe. When the simulator was not in use for its true purpose, training interceptor pilots, I logged many hours "flying" it as part of the required maintenance. I became so good on the simulator, I think I just might have been able to fly the real thing.

Wally Moffett, e-mail, 04.11.2013 18:52

I was stationed at Chitose Jan. 1955 to Jan1956 and was a RADAR crew chief for that time. There for the cross over of F-86 F to D and building of the 339th Squadron with 86-D's. Don Toews, e-mail, 21.02.2013 23:56

Worked radar shop flight-line & 100 hr. inspection dock with 339th at Chitose during 1957. Winter short fly-days because of snow, but told to relax for long summer hours, then ran low on fuel for summer so had Wednesdays and weekends off for "recreation." Sent to 16th at Naha when Chitose was returned to Japanese Air Defense. Too short in Naha to go with 16th to Taiwan during the uprising there. Finally sent to Moody at Valdosta, Georgia.

I worked IEC at Stewart AFB in 1955. We received an entire squadron, I think about 30 aircraft. Within one month every one was out for bad IEC, Air Force had failed to train IEC techs. Unit asked for volunteers from jet mechanics, engine shop, radar and electricians. I signed up ,GE sent a very smart guy by the name of Don Willets to our base, he trained us with a black board and chalk to be IEC technicians. Within a couple weeks we had all the birds back in the air. Our run up area was about a mile from flight line. I asked if I could be checked out to taxi, the squadron commander a man by the name of Ratty said okay. For the next two years me and my shop mates spent almost every day in the run up area. It was a great education and fun job.

Jerry Holloway, e-mail, 30.05.2012 01:25

I was in the 357 from fall of 55 to spring of 57. I think 403 was my ship with the nose art of ( Myassisdragging) in old Engish letters. The guy before me was a guy named Joyce from NC.

My dad was stationed with the 496th in 1955 in Germany; the year they won the Hughes Trophy. They are having a reunion next month and would like to have the trophy for a few days. It seems that no one knows where it is. I have already contacted the National AF Museum and a number of other sites; thought I would talk to the people that were there that might know what happened to the trophy. My dad was James F. Ballard. Any thoughts?

My father flew the F-86D out of Sioux City, Iowa, as his first major posting out of USAF flight training in, I think, 1951. I'm not sure just what he and his fellow interceptor pilots were supposed to be protecting from Soviet bombers coming over the North Pole--the cornfields? Ain't much in Iowa. At any rate, he eventually rotated to Marietta, Georgia, where he converted to the B-57B in 1956.

John Irwin, e-mail, 04.04.2011 17:06

I was a T-33 and Dog instructor at Perrin 1853 through 1956. Sat alert much of the time during 1956 ... we were the only armed interceptors in south-central US.
Biggest problem with the Dog was the limited fuel supply. An intercept mission in mostly AB was a half-hour flight at the most.
The AB was restricted for a time. Taking off at P)errin at over 100 degrees with no AB was a real sphincter tightener. Fortunately the hill at the south end of the runway was not very high.

2 Alert Birds were up on a practice intercept somebody didn't keep good tabs on fuel these were from Ellington AFB TX one Bird landed at College Station the other landed in a field in Iola TX touch down in the middle of a field hit a big pile of dirt bounced over a ditch landed in the middle of a dirt runway went off the end and bogged down pulled it out changed tires brakes brake lines gassed it up Maj.Jack Burden took it off the the 2 lane road wing tips were hanging over both sides Great pilot Just Passed RIP put me on KP once i deserved it

Darrell Meldrum, e-mail, 17.03.2011 17:10

I was crew chief with the Texas ANG Houston from 58 thru 68 we had F86D & L's .Bob Hoover Flew one of our birds for a demo for an air Show slow rolled Gear & Flaps down at 110 Knots looked like it was going to fall out of the air but it didn't 1960 We got F102's big change

Darrell Barr, e-mail, 15.03.2011 07:58

Was stationed at Misawa from May 1956 to Oct 1957. Spent time crewing on the flight line, but enjoyed working the alert pad the best.....good duty...best chow. Can only remember the names of two pilots: 1st Lt. Ange & 1st Lt. Ferry. Later met Captain Ange at Castle AFB when on grnd crew on KC-135s.

Roger Pile, e-mail, 02.03.2011 18:58

Flew the F86D/L with the 85th FIS at Scott AFB from 1956 until it was disbanded in July 1959. Had to eject from one when the oil pump failed and the engine froze before I could get it back on the ground. Landed in Mascoutah,Il about 3 miles from the base. Plane crashed at edge of town, across from a grammar school (which was in session), but there were no injuries to anyone, except my stiff neck from not having my head all the way back when I squeezed the ejection seat trigger.

Rod Martin, e-mail, 28.02.2011 02:26

I, too, served with the 496th at Landstuhl and Hahn, 1956-1958; Then later at George (F-100's). Also had my turn at Wheelus AFB, Tripoli for the training sessions with the tow planes. As an Aircraft mechanic, I thought the Dog was an easy plane to maintain. Enjoyed the nice country side at Hahn too.

RichardDRoyce, e-mail, 19.02.2011 06:41

I enjoyed working on the F86D &F102 At Ethan Allen AFB 1955 until 1959 Winoski,Vt. I retired in 1990 as a CMGT sure miss those days

Don O'Neal, e-mail, 17.02.2011 03:16

I was a Jet engine mechanic on the F-86D in the 37th FIS at Ethan Allen AFB Vermont, from 1955 to 1957.

I was in the 440th at Erding Germany in 1957-8 as an aAircraft Electrician, went down to Wheelus as part od Dei,86 FIW. We replaced the 431st. It was a long 10 months working in Wheelus.

John C. Parlapiano, e-mail, 19.01.2011 04:19

I was assigned to the 440th FIS 1956 to 58 at Erding.I was the medic and assigned to the base hospital.I was CQ.

Darrell Barr, e-mail, 31.12.2010 02:33

I was assigned to the 4th F.I.S squadron in Misawa Japan early 1956. Started as asst. crew chief, then crew chief on the F-86D. I spent as much time on alert duty at the new alert hanger on the far end of the runway as I could. The duty was good and the chow was the best on the base. After about 22 months was transferred to KC-135s at Castle A.F.B., Merced Ca. Loved both aircraft, but got to fly with the KC-135s a lot. Would do it again if I could.

Art Benjamin, e-mail, 12.12.2010 21:22

I flew the F-86D in the 25th FIS at Naha Okinawa, '58-60. We deployed to Tainan during the Taiwan strait crisis of '58. Later, I flew STOL U-10's in Vietnam as an Air Commando. Then as an aero engineer & research pilot, was Chief of Test for the F-111, later flew nearly all versions of the C-135. Retired from the 4950th Test Wing at WPAFB in '78.

Dick Coykendall, e-mail, 20.11.2010 00:06

From '52 to '54 at Wright Field I was the technical contract officer on the J47-GE-17 engine on the F86D. We were experienceing a rash of fires due to afterburner fuel supply system failures and I, a lowly 2nd Lt, had to face tough Gen. Al Boyd, then Commander of the R&D organization. The result was two groundings of the Dog, with the cause traced eventually to fuel supply line failure and no air driven pump governing.

Charles Nemejc, e-mail, 10.11.2010 17:29

With the 431st FIS at Wheelus and the F86D. What a plane, enjoyed working on it, and the great people stationed at wheelus 1956-1958...........

Ed Jones, e-mail, 31.10.2010 17:35

Well guys it looks like I am the new guy on the block. I was with the 496th from 56 to 60 in EFC on the 86 and AFCS on the Duce. Many great times and memorial drives back from Koblenz to Hahn. I loved the 86 and marveled at the 102.The best part is remembering all the good times we had back then especially when we get together at out Squardon Reunions at Myrtle Beach.

Bob Smith, e-mail, 19.10.2010 01:21

Served as C/C on F-86D #FU-408 in the 54th Fighter Intercepter SQDN @ Ellwworth AFB; 1953/1956. Ironically I returned 2-weeks after discharge and on the front page of the Rapid City paper was my old airplane in a heap after a crash. Pilot bailed and uninjured.

Joe Watkins, e-mail, 16.10.2010 17:18

I was a fuel control specialist with the 440th FIS at Landstuhl in 1955 and we moved to Erding in 1956 and I returned to the states in 1958. Reenlisted and went to Sioux City, IA and worked on the D until they were phased out. Went on to data processing and then computers. SAGE and AUTODIN Systems. Transfered to the Army in 1968 as a CWO and retired after Vietnam in 1974. Hosted a 440th FIS reunion here in New Orleans in 2003. Love to hear from any of the old gang.

I was a CC on F-86d's and L's with the Fla ANG 1955-1960. We sent our birds to the bone yard in AZ as we transitioned to F-102's. One on the 51-5915 ended up on a pole in San Carlos, AZ with the original paint and it is still there. You can see it by an image search on google by the number 51-5915.

Edward W (Web) Wallof, e-mail, 05.10.2010 23:18

In 1954, I was based at Itazuke at Fukuoka in Japan when our F-94B's were replaced with F-86D's. We, the 68th FIS, were the first squadron outside the continental US to be equipped with the "D". On our third flight we were required to climb to 45,000ft, point the aircraft toward a spot directly below, light the afterburner, dive straight down until exceeding the speed of sound. After doing this, and starting my pull-out, I noticed the exhaust nozzle indicator indicated fully closed nozzles; however from the obvious lack of thrust and low tail-pipe temperature, I was certain they were fully open . reported the problem and made a "flame-out" type approach and landing. I was met by approximately a dozen tech-reps, who assured me nothing similar to this had ever happened to one of their wonderful aircraft.

Robert Brown, CMGst, USAF (Ret, e-mail, 19.09.2010 01:52

In the latter part of my 1953-1957 tour as advisor to the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) DoD programed a couple squadrons of F-86F. A new base was established for these new aircraft into the RNoAF inventory. In those days when a new type aircraft was being put into place a massive supply support package was set up, called Table II. At the RNoAF main logistics depot I suggested they set up an automatic system of splitting the Table II. One third of each item would automatically go to the new base and two thirds into depot stock. The suggestion was implemented. This also reduced the amount of handling of supplies. By the time the first F86F arrived at it' new base, full supply support was on hand. This generated a favorable comment down the NATO chain of command. I did not remain in Norway long enough to get a full feeling of the performance of the plane but info I received later indicated RNoAF, USAF and NATO was happy with the new addition.

I was in the 357th FIS in casablanca in the fall of 1955 until the spring of 1957. I was c/c on a 86 that had nose art with one word in old English . it was MYASSISDRAGGING. I think the number was 403. anybody out there that has been there and done that?

Fritz Mueller, e-mail, 24.08.2010 23:58

I was in the 525th FIS when we transitioned to F-86D. Great bird to work on. Had many good times at Landstuhl and going TDY to wheelus. I was a radar Tech. I am currently in touch with some radar troops and Col. Pickron Sqdn Commander

Hi Mac Mccarthy here, was at yokota AFB japan from jan 1955 till june 1956,as a crew chief in the 35th fighter incept.group, and 41st fighter incept Sq.on the F-86Ds,MAC.

Marc McClelland, e-mail, 16.08.2010 18:08

I enjoyed flying both the F-86D and F-86L (The lower picture looks like an L to me. Arn't those wing slats I see?)with the 539th FIS at George in 1956 through '58. I later flew both the F-102 and F-106. We were diaappointed that the YF-12A, which was to be our next generation fighter-interceptor, did not get funded... I retired in '87.

Bob Flink, e-mail, 11.08.2010 19:27

I was with the 496th FIS at Hahn from 1957 to 1960 in the radar shop. I recall the "hanger queen" that Norm Kelley mentioned above and TDYs to Wheelus AFB in Lybia. The tube-based radar of the times required a lot of tuning and troubleshooting. Cross trained but never worked on the F-102.

Norman L Burris, e-mail, 28.05.2010 20:34

I serviced 4 years Aug. 1954 to April 1958 with the 514th FIS Manston England as crew chief on F86D #210033, the F86D was a great aircraft, meet alot of good friends in those four years,

Joe Ho;den, e-mail, 15.04.2010 23:32

Iwas one of the first AF pilots to recieve the full fourty hour course at Tyndall AFB. I was assigned to the 85th FIS at Scott AFB, shortly after completing the school I was sent TDY to ferry F-86D aircrsft from the factory and also the Norton AFB mod line to various bases throughout the US
I was then assigned to Grandview AFB( Richards Gabor)Missouri and flew the D till 1958, one of my favorite airplanes.

Norm Kelley, e-mail, 02.04.2010 23:52

I was with the 496th at Landstuhl in June of 1956 until our move to Hahn at the end of that year and then at Hahn until July of 1960. I was crew chief on the famous "hanger queen" 069, for the few times that it did get off the ground for scheduled test flights. A very memorable experience. The F102 tried to replace the "D" but failed.

Ray Frahn, e-mail, 27.02.2010 03:36

I was stationed at Misawa AFB - Jan 57 to Jan 59. Our 4th Fighter 86Ds won the PACAF Far East Weapons meet at Okinawa and represented the Far East at the Tyndal AFB 1958 Project William Tell. We got our clocks cleaned by a Nat. Guard outfit from Tex. William 'Ted' Twinting was our A&E officer. Fun time, fun aircraft ..

Don Holtz, e-mail, 07.02.2010 23:22

I flew the "D" with the 4th FIS at Misawa Japan, May of '57 to May of '59. Great duty for a brown bar. We fired some dummy rockets at a rag towed by a B-57 one day. My bird swallowed a fin from a rocket. Lucky I was close to Misawa. Landed down wind in the overrun and had to hop over the barrier. It took a few minutes for me to get steady enough to get out of the aircraft. Some fun.

Bob Krischel, e-mail, 12.01.2010 08:14

Ahh, yes the F-86D brings a lot of fond memories. I was with the 514th in England from 1955 until it got moved to Landstuhl AFB Germany. I believe we moved in 1958 and I was there until I got out in 1959. I was also a E-4 (radar) mechanic. I stayed out for 86 days after leaving Germany. Re-inlisted and went to Selfridge AFB, Mich. Went from 86D's to the F-106 A/B. (oh yes, what fast acting doors???)

Marvin Gehle, e-mail, 09.01.2010 05:34

I was a pilot at Naha in the 16th FIS from 1955 to 1956. I had an engine explosion during a flight. I had practiced an engine out flight previously and was able to return to Naha. It flies real good without an engine operating!

Bud (Slim) Reynolds, e-mail, 13.12.2009 19:21

I worked in the hangar doing 100 hour inspections on the F-86D the three years I spent in the 496th FIS in Germany.

We have a 496th reunion every year at Myrtle Beach, the officers and pilots also have a reunion every other year. Contact me if you're interested for more details.

Julian Lewis, e-mail, 05.06.2009 07:50

I arrived at the 68th FIS, Itazuke, Japan in November, 1958 and flew the F86D until we received F102s in 1960. My last flight in the F86D was Feb 11, 1960 when I delivered an F86 to the Korean Air Force at Pusan, Korea. At Itazuke we flew the F86D in some of the worse weather in the world and never lost an aircraft for any reason when F100s were dropping from the sky every day. Incidentally, Bob Hoover came to Itazuke and gave a demonstration of flying the F86 I'll never forget.

Butch Owens, 09.05.2008 07:00

Limited experience at Naha Okinawa.
Scary/Dangerous airplane for ground crews with fast acting doors. I was happy to leave it for the F-102.

Dick Michaud, e-mail, 06.05.2008 06:34

In 1955, the 496th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, of which I was lucky enough to be a pilot, stationed at Landstuhl AFB, Germany, won the Hughes trophy as the outstanding FIS in the USAF. Interestingly, all the while we were losing aircraft due to faulty turbine wheel blades.
