RESEARCH GLIDER | Virtual Aircraft Museum / USA / Northrop |
A Northrop feasibility study in September 1942 for a rocket-powered military interceptor brought the company a contract for design and construction of three MX-324 gliders to test the aerodynamics of the proposed 9.75m span flying wing with a prone pilot cockpit. The third glider was converted before completion to the MX-334 with a 91kg thrust Aerojet XCAL-200 rocket motor, and following tests with the gliders towed by a Lockheed P-38 the MX-334 flew under power for 3 minutes 30 seconds on 22 June 1944.
