Thus Japanese aircraft would pick up an additional 12-14% in speed at full boost. As for why this aircraft wasn't produced, the Japanese changed their minds on the concept of a single crew twin engine fighter, and this was relegated to the history books. reply |
Hiroyuki Takeuchi, e-mail, 23.03.2012 08:33 As far as I know, the project was terminated not because of performance, but because at the point of termination, they were getting combat reports that indicated that the Ki45 was totally ineffective against single engine fighters. As a result many Ki45s units were converted to ground attack units, and this project was also changed to an attack plane project, the Ki102.
Of course, then at that point, the requirement for a heavily armed bomber intercepter arose and the project was changed again to a fighter project (Ki102Ko).
So this plane was a victim of changing war situations and consequent requirements. Otherwise it was a good design, and had there been someone at IJAAF who had a better foresite, there is good chance that the Ki45 units that intercepted the B-29s over Japan in 1944 and early 45 would have been equipped with Ki96s instead. Not that it would have changed the outcome, but would probalby had a better chance at getting at the unescorted b-29s from Chinese bases. reply | zifeng, 20.06.2011 14:09 so I can only summise that the Japanese had other problems other than speed. reply |

considered rather than just power to weight ratios. The performance is not dissimilar to the DeHavilland DH98 Mosquito which was of similar size and weight and this was one of the most outstanding aircraft of WWII, so I can only summise that the Japanese had other problems other than speed. reply | Mick Dunne, e-mail, 23.11.2008 08:42 I will NEVER believe that this little sucker couldn't do any better than 373mph! Makes no sense whatever! 3,000hp in a 6 ton airframe as clean as this??? NEVERRRRR! I think the Japanese were very modest about performance claims for their aircraft (not being as obsessed as the Americans for wanting to be the guys with the fastest stuff in the sky!) reply |
