Ernst Udet lent his name to an aircraft company set up by William Pohl of Milwaukee. Pohl thought that there was a strong case for a cheap light plane for the German masses. He realised that to have someone as famous as Udet on board would be only to the company's benefit and so the factory was set up in 1921 as Udet Fluzeugbau in rented workshops at Milbertshof nr.Munchen. The first aircraft the U1, a single seat sport plane powered by 30hp Haacke was removed from the workshops one night by horse drawn cart, in fear of the of being detected by the Allied Commission, and taken to Ramersdorf. At Ramersdorf it was completed under the cover of a legitimate business that manufactured bee hives and chicken coops. When the restrictions were partially lifted on May 5th 1922, the plane was towed behind a car through the streets of Munich to a commercial airport where the first flight took place on 22nd May. Udet Flugzeugbau GmbH became the largest aircraft manufacturer in Germany in the 1920's. However, with a large product line and a large workforce the company had probably expanded too fast, Pohl returned to the U.S.A. and even with other investors the company folded in 1925.
