| Barry, 11.01.2010 14:27 There were 4 models built, Werke Nos 7006,7008,7009 and 7010 (D-1142,D-1143,D-1144 and D-1145). The model illustrated, named "Germania" (D-1145), was specially converted to carry 3 people plus the pilot for a record breaking flight to fly east-west across the Atlantic. The pilot, former WW I fighter pilot Otto Konnecke, intended to fly from Cologne Butzweilerhof but was dogged by bad weather over Europe. He then decided to fly eastwards to Ameica via India and Japan. He left Cologne on the 27th September 1927 and arrived in India the next year. Because of problems with both the aircraft and the crew Konnecke abandoned the attempt and returned home. reply |
