The Salmson 2A2 was a two-seat reconnaissance and observation plane. It was built in large numbers and was widely used by the French and U.S. Air Services during World War I. The Salmson 2A2 was highly thought of by the aviators of both services, the Americans in particular considering it better than their own U.S.-built version of the DH-4. About the only criticism leveled against this airplane was that it had too large a space between the pilot and observer, making cooperation between the two men difficult during combat.

Bugs - yes, the Salmson was flown by American Aviators in WW I. My uncle flew it. He was with the 104th Aero Squadron in France in 1918 as observation pilot. The Salmson S2A went into service in 1918. It was used by 24 French squadrons and 11 American. A total of 3200 were built (one of the largest numbers of any aircraft used during the war), of which 705 went to the Americans. Excellent for recon. Versatility meant it was used for daylight bombing and ground-attack missions.
