Very much like Short Brothers, Wight under Howard Wright saw the Sunbeam engine as the inspiration to a very much larger float plane. The 840 was very much a copy of the Short 184 and may have held an advantage in having longer floats so negating the use of a tail float. The Admiralty took delivery of 52 out of an original requirement of 68. There is no record of any of them used in action or joining any specific squadron although they were based at ports for occasional coastal patrols.
One was built as a land plane which is rather oddly reproduced here. As I have said oft times before the photo policy of this site is a little strange.
