Developed as a replacement for the Spad S.VII and S XIII, the Sh 4 was ordered by the Czechoslovak Air Force in 1922 with deliveries of all 20 models starting in 1923. However, in 1927 the poor build quality resulted in various problems so the Sh 4 became the Sh 4 trainer. All aircraft were retired in 1928.
