| The JH-7 - Jianhongzhaji (Fighter-bomber) 7 - was, at the time of its debut, the most ambitious Chinese combat aircraft of indigenous design. A tandem two-seater intended to combine counterair fighter tasks with deep penetration interdiction and maritime strike in dedicated versions, the JH-7 was intended to enter the inventories of both the Air Force and the Navy during the mid 'nineties. Appearing in August 1988, when the XAC (Xian Aircraft Company) rolled out the first of three prototypes, the JH-7 was intended to carry up to 7000kg of ordnance distributed between six underwing stores stations, other armament including a single 23mm cannon and wingtip close-range AAMs. The prototypes of the JH-7 were allegedly each powered by paired LMC WP13A II turbojets rated at 4350kg and 6720kg with afterburning, but it was anticipated that the series JH-7 would have the LM WS6A augmented turbofan with a maximum afterburning thrust of 14100kg.

You can compare this to, for example, a Mitsubishi F-2. reply | Aircraft has never won a battl, e-mail, 15.12.2010 01:43 Expert pilots win everytime. Missiles can help. Guns are the death stroke no one survives. reply |
| Ian Blackwolf, e-mail, 25.03.2010 06:23 Love the fact China got a license to build the RR Spey...then spent twenty years trying to design a plane for it, finally settling on this. And NOW it's up against the Flanker. Talk about good design /bad timing. reply | leo rudnicki, e-mail, 09.04.2009 00:56 It appears a bit Jaguarish and less than $200million a copy. 12 of these with wingtip A-A8 orA-A11 against a single F-22 or F /A 18E? Quantity has a quality all it's own. reply | samp, 23.12.2008 02:53 compare it's statistics to western fighters like the F-22 and F-15, this thing seems to be more than a little outclassed. reply | najm, e-mail, 24.05.2007 19:07 lionheart /braveheart /warlord of skies reply |
